1974 AC/DC is formed
in Australia by Scottish-born Brothers Angus and Malcolm Young,
with the subsequent recruitment of vocalist Bon Scott,
drummer Phil Rudd, and bassist Mark Evans.
1975 AC/ DC's first
Australian album, "HIGH VOLTAGE," is released in February. Production
is by the famed team of Vanda & Young (Angus & Malcolm's older brother,
George Young, and his partner, Harry Vanda). Their second release down under,
"T.N.T.," appears in December. Both LPs earn Australian platinum,
gold and silver awards. Meanwhile, AC/DC's live following has reached
hysteria-generating proportions.
1976 AC/DC is signed
to a worldwide contract with Atlantic Records. Their first release for the
labet, "HIGH VOLTAGE," is a compilation of the first two Australian
albums. In the spring of the year, AC/DC arrives in the U.K. and proceeds to
take the country by storm. Similar reaction is provoked across Europe.
"HIGH VOLTAGE" is released in the States in October. Meanwhile, AC/DC
has completed another LP, "DIRTY DEEDS DONE DIRT CHEAP," which is
released overseas in November - but U.S. release is by-passed due to the
still-building success of "HIGH VOLTAGE."
1977 The next AC/DC
album, "LET THERE BE ROCK," is released in June and is the band's
first simultaneous worldwide release. In the summer, joined by British bass
player Cliff Williams, AC/DC makes their eagerly-anticipated debut U.S. tour -
a marathon journey which finds them criss-crossing the country, rapidly
building true grass roots support.
1978 Two new AC/DC
albums are released this year - "POWERAGE" (May) and their first live
outing,"IF YOU WANT BLOOD — YOU'VE GOT IT" (November). Establishing a
clear-cut pattern, each album far outsells its predecessor, as the band's loyal
following swells with each release. Substantial credit for this exponential
growth is due to AC/DC's relentless assault.
1979 This year finds
AC/DC changing strategies for their new album. Moving their recording base to
London, the band enlists producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange and lays
down "HIGHWAY TO HELL." Released in July, it quickly emerges as the
break-through LP they had long been working towards. Their first RIAA platinum
seller, it goes an to multi-million status in the U.S. alone, not to mention
huge worldwide success.
1980 In February, the rock world is shocked and saddened by
the death of AC/DC lead singer Bon Scott. After a period of re-thinking and
re-grouping, AC/DC announces that they will continue. Holding extensive
auditions, AC/DC discovers the perfect match for their inimitable style in
Geordie vocalist Brian Johnson. The first album with the new line-up,
"BACK IN BLACK," is recorded in the Bahamas and New York City.
Released in July, it confirms AC/DC's ever-growing power with astonishing
force. Remaining in the Top Ten on U.S. charts for five months, it goes on to
seil over live million copies in America alone (eight million plus worldwide).
By the end of the year, AC/DC has garnered 27 platinum or gold album awards in
eight countries.
1981 Due to industry and consumer demand, in March Atlantic
decides to release the semi-legendary "DIRTY DEEDS DONE DIRT CHEAP"
album in the U.S., where it had only previously been available as an import.
Despite the fact that it was recorded live years earlier, interest in AC/DC is
running at such a feverish pitch that it becomes a multi-platinum, Top Five
U.S. album, garnering heavy "new LP" radio airplay to boot. By the
middle of the year, AC/ DC's entire U.S. Atlantic catalog has hit gold and/or
platinum status, as their earliest LPs become revitalized best-sellers. At the
end of November, the group returns with their new studio collection, "FOR
THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK WE SALUTE YOU," recorded in Paris. Entering U.S.
charts in the Top Ten, it passes the one million mark in its first week. Two
weeks later, it becomes the first U.S. #1 album in AC/ DC's career and enters
the hallowed multi-platinum category.
1982 Following extensive global touring in support of
"FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK WE SALUTE YOU," AC/ DC takes a Jong-overdue
break after literally years of non-stop recording and performing.
1983 In August, Atlantic releases the long-awaited new AC/DC
album, "FLICK OF THE SWITCH." Their first new LP in 21 months, it was
recorded at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas. The band's first entirely
self-produced effort, it catapults the quintet into the Top Ten once again.
Coinciding with the LP's release, AC/DC announces that Simon Wright, a
20-year-old native of Manchester, England, has joined the band as their new
drummer. Simon makes his debut with AC/DC on their 1983 North American tour.
1984 The summer of '84 finds AC/DC reasserting their preeminent
position in international hard rock circles with a triumphant European concert
blitz. In August, AC/DC's headlining appearance at England's annual Castle
Donnington festival draws the biggest crowd of the event. In October, Atlantic
celebrates AC/DC's Tenth Anniversary with the release of "'74
JAILBREAK," a mini-LP containing live vintage songs previously unreleased
in the U.S. Included are several tunes from the original Australian version of
"HIGH VOLTAGE," plus "Jailbreak," which first appeared on
the Australian "DIRTY DEEDS. . ."
1985 AC/DC kicks off the year in grand style with a pair of
show-stopping performances at the massive Rock In Rio festival, again drawing
the biggest audience numbers - in this case some 400,000 aficionados. Then it's
off to Mountain Studios in Montreux, Switzerland for the recording of their
eagerly-anticipated new studio album, produced by group founders Angus &
Malcolm Young. Released in late-June, it contains ten new tunes by Messrs.
Young, Young & Johnson. Coinciding with the LP's release, AC/DC completes
work in New York City on their first long-form, conceptual video production -
utilizing animation, character actors, and live performance. A complete
"mini-feature," it contains live video episodes based on "FLY ON
THE WALL" and connected by an ongoing storyline. AC/DC also announces
their first North American concert tour in two years, scheduled to open the
first week of September.
